The Founding History of Hillary Production Machining
In the fall of 1985, a trio of seasoned machinists—Ed Dyck, Al Sabourin, and Garry Dyck—came together with a vision that would soon lay the cornerstone of what is known today as Hillary Production Machining. Their combined expertise and shared aspirations led to the birth of the company on November 7th, 1985, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey in the world of precision machining.
By the spring of 1986, Hillary had set up its first operational base at 1049 Erin Street, Winnipeg. This move was the first of many in the company’s history, indicative of its growth and burgeoning reputation. Merely two years later, in a testament to its rapid expansion and success, Hillary relocated to a larger facility at 1100 Wall Street.
The mid-90s brought both innovation and change. Around 1995, Ed Dyck, putting his creative talents to use, designed the company’s early corporate logo—a spinning face cutter that not only symbolized Hillary’s industry but also became a hallmark of its identity.
As the millennium drew near, transitions awaited. Ed Dyck retired as president on November 1st, 1999, a pivotal moment that saw the introduction of three junior shareholders, infusing new energy into the leadership dynamics of Hillary. Unfortunately, this period also saw a decline in the health of Al Sabourin, who, after battling cancer, passed away in June 2004. His legacy, however, continued to inspire the company’s values and dedication.
On a note of continuity and homage to its history, November 1st, 2006—Hillary’s twenty-first anniversary—was chosen as the day for Garry Dyck to retire as president. This day marked a significant leadership transition, with the baton passed to a new management team poised to steer Hillary into the future.
Under the stewardship of the new owners—Ross, Claude, and Shane—the company not only continued to uphold its tradition of excellence but also expanded its horizons. Recognizing the need to diversify and grow, the team decided to incorporate laser services, a move that necessitated yet another relocation. In 2014, Hillary moved to a state-of-the-art facility at 130 Wyatt Rd, where it operates to this day.
Each chapter in Hillary’s history is a testament to its resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to quality and innovation. From its humble beginnings in a small workshop to its present status as a beacon of industry standards, Hillary Production Machining continues to carve its path forward, honoring the legacy of its founders while embracing the future with open arms.
